Principal's Report
The wild weather we have been experiencing this term has provided many opportunities to rally and demonstrate our school values of Courage and Growth. There is so much to celebrate!
Leading the Way: Our School Values Olympics
SEL Lead Teacher Janelle Manshanden's School Values Olympics initiative was an outstanding success and a wonderful way of celebrating “living our values”. The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) shared our School Values Olympics initiative statewide and was actioned across many schools.
Through this work Janelle has been recognised for her leadership and has been nominated for a DECYP Bright Futures Award.
Congratulations to all children who received a Values token for their house, and to the members of the winning house CASEY who won a very special Reward Activity Day.
Photo of our Olympic Values Opening Ceremony Flag procession, each class proudly displayed their “Values Flag” and shared how they symbolised our School Values on their Flag.
2024 Young Archies Awards
Congratulations to Indie (Prep Platypus) who won the Kindy – Prep Category, this is a significant and prestigious award. Indie’s Artwork titled “Mum and Dad” features her much loved female rabbits. Indi is planning to use her prize money to purchase a male rabbit, so they can love even more bunnies!
Indie is photographed with Secretary Tim Bullard at the 2024 Young Archies Award Presentations (Hobart Exhibition).
Book Week 2024: Reading is magic!
WOW, WOW, WOW and WOW!
One of the most celebrated events on our school calendar is Book Week! The Literacy Team led by Kate Longey channelled this year’s theme, “Reading is Magic” successfully casting a spell to ensure the weather was kind throughout our Book Week Community Walk!
There were so many highlights, celebrating our shared love for reading.
- Book Week Walk, Parade and Competition
- Celebrating the Children’s Book Council of Australia Winning Books
- Launch of the 2024 Margate Book in a Day
- Magical Door Class Competition
- WOOF Day (Celebrating and Supporting our school Story Dogs)

WRITE A BOOK IN A DAY The Kids’ Cancer Project
Congratulations to Grade 6 students Owen, Ruby, Sebastian, Noah, Bonnie, Hunter, Myie, Shani, Ari and Liam who participated in the “Book in a Day Challenge” as part of our Extension Literacy Program.
Students worked together all day and into the night to produce their very own book “The Broken Brothers”. The book will be published online and available for children with cancer to read in hospital. The entry fee of the challenge is to raise much needed funds, Grade 6 students proudly contributed money they have raised through the Grade 6 Legacy Fund, as well as the generous support of members of our school community achieved the impressive entry fee donation of $800 for The Kid’s Cancer Project.
We value you, Ian!
Children across the school nominated Ian for a School Values award. Ian is a local retired Teacher who volunteers most days at our school, he thoroughly enjoys being part of our school community and is a passionate advocate for improving children’s literacy outcomes. Children couldn’t decide which value Ian demonstrates most and settled on Connection and Growth.
Children described Ian as being a kind, patient and cheerful person, who helps us to improve our reading by listening and asking us questions about the book. Children were particularly chuffed that Ian dressed up for Book Week and was a judge for our parade.
When sharing news of Ian’s Award in an assembly, children who have read to Ian were asked to raise their hand. This spur of a moment question resulted in hundreds of hands shooting up into the air. We sincerely do value you, Ian!

Book in a day
Write a Book in a Day challenges teams across Australia to write and illustrate a novel in just 12 hours to raise vital funds for kids' cancer research.
Book In A Day is part of our Extension Literacy Program here at Margate.
Ten year six students were selected from a very competitive field of thirty applicants. We worked all day and well into the night, and produced a book made by the entire group.
The book will be published online and will be available for children suffering from cancer to read in hospital. Thanks to our very generous school community, we have raised over $800 so far for research!
Student quotes:
“It was fun but challenging.”
“At the beginning we felt very excited and keen, then we just felt like we were getting it done. I was nervous to present to families.”
“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, I liked doing it, and it was a big achievement. I haven’t done anything like that before.”
“It made it harder working with other people but we got more done. I like how everyone had their own style of writing or drawing but it made the whole book better.”
“Coming up with ideas as a group is way easier than individually.”
“It gives us the feeling of achievement and excitement, and a stronger connection with our friends.”
Students all worked very hard. They were passionate about their book, they were supportive of each other and challenged themselves. They appeared very proud when presenting their book to families at the end of the day.

Congratulations Isla
Recently, one of our very own students showcased their remarkable skill, determination, and sportsmanship at the GKR (Go-Kan-Ryu) Karate World Cup held in Sydney.
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Isla Huskins in Year 6, has brought home a gold medal from the first Karate World Cup held since COVID. The event, this time held in Sydney, attracted over 1,400 competitors from across the globe, including teams from Australia, the UK, New Zealand, and the USA.
Isla’s victories are a testament to her dedication to karate. Training three to four days a week with two-hour sessions, Isla not only displays a deep passion for the sport but also an unwavering drive to continuously improve. Her success at the world championship comes as she prepares to grade from a red belt to a Brown belt in the coming weeks, proving that she is truly at the top of her game.
Duty of Care
We have had a number of students at school well prior to 8.25am.
We would like to remind families that the school does not have duty of care for children before 8.25am and encourages families to drop student/s off from then onwards.
The school office is open during each term from 8.25am - 3.45pm Monday to Friday.
Safety of Van Morey Road
Van Morey Road is very busy around school times with buses and cars going everywhere. This is why we had a school crossing installed. For the safety of yourself and your children please only use the school crossing to cross Van Morey Road.
Booking of the Gym
Just a friendly reminder if you wish to use the gym after hours for training, please make sure you ring and speak to the office first to check that there are no other bookings. Thank you.
Collecting your child from school within the school day
If you are collecting your child from school within the school day for an appointment or other early departure reason, please come by the office first. The office will then assist in calling your child up to the office and you can sign your child out.
Attendance Notifications
Please contact the Office with attendance notifications no later than 9.30am to avoid receiving a phone call from our office staff.
If you are social distancing, please email margate.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
Please follow us on our School Facebook page for infomation about upcoming school events and celebrations.
Lost Property
Please help us by coming along and looking through the lost property items. Named lost items will be returned to the student (where possible) and all un-named items will be passed on to the uniform shop at the end of term.
